As Calderdale Retreat welcomes 2019, we look forward to another successful year
With the start of the New Year came my first anniversary as Registered Manager of Calderdale Retreat, and what a year it has been! We’ve celebrated successes, welcomed new people to our team of dedicated health care assistants, said teary ‘goodbyes’ to some special friends who we will always hold close in our hearts, and seen our home flourish.
It’s not been without challenges; working within health and social care, challenges are guaranteed. But, as I say to my team, ‘a smooth sea never made a skilful sailor!’ (anon).
Today, as I walk around the home, my heart fills with joy at the sights I see: people laughing together, enjoying each other's company; people enjoying the freedom of independence; maintaining autonomy over their daily lives with a team that is supportive without being imposing; no barriers.
The atmosphere is calm, not ruled by the clock - people simply enjoying the homely environment.
I cannot help but feel a sense of pride. We’ve got it right. We are the guests our residents trust to have in their home, trust to support them along their journey. We have built a unique partnership which ensures that journey is filled with health, independence, dignity, and respect.
I have enjoyed every single moment of my time as Manager of The Retreat, truly. However, the time has come for me to hand over the baton to a new Manager and for me to step up to an Operational role, continuing the good work we have started, taking the home onto even greater things.
As I told you in my very first blog post, we have our sights set on ‘Outstanding’ not for the accolade, but because we believe that the people who choose to live at Calderdale Retreat deserve nothing less than the standard of care that comes with a five-star rating, and it will be my absolute pleasure supporting Stuart Tyrer to achieve this.
So, with that, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your faith in me, for your support and your friendship. I am very much looking forward to the next chapter!
